Big institutions协会 have unique唯一的 potential潜能 to create change. And I believe that we as individuals have unique唯一的 power to influence影响 the direction that those institutions协会 take. Now these beliefs did not come naturally自然地 to me because trusting big institutions协会 not really part of my family legacy遗赠(物). My mother escaped North Korea when she was 10 years old. To do so she had to allude暗指 every big institution协会 in her life, repressive governments, occupying armies and even armed border边缘 patrols. Later when she decided she wanted to emigrate永久(使)移居 to the United States she had to defy违抗 an entire culture that said that girls would never be the best and brightest.
Only because her name happens to sound like a boy's was she able to finagle her way into the government immigration移民 exam to come to the United States. Because of her bravery勇敢 and passion激情 I've had all the opportunities that she never did and that has made my story so different.
