Hello, everyone.

Learn English With Podcast Conversation Episode 6

Hello, everyone.

00:00
08:47
Hello, everyone. In this English episode(插曲), we will be focusing on English conversation. Listening to English conversation is an essential(必要的) part of improving your English language skills. It can help you improve your listening, speaking, and comprehension skills. Our topic is the importance(重要) of English speaking skills in school education. Hey, Robin.
How's your English practice going? It's going well. But, you know, I wish I could improve my English speaking skills at school if only we had more opportunities to practice there. Absolutely(完全地) right. I feel the same way. If we could practice English from an early age, we'd become fluent much faster.
Hmm, true. So, Ronika, how do you think we can solve this problem? Well, there are several ways to address(写名字地址) this issue(问题). But here's the sad part. In many schools, even the teachers struggle( 努力) with English. How can they effectively(有效地) help students?
You're right. I've heard stories about teachers who can't speak English fluently(流利地) themselves. Absolutely. The first step to improving this situation is to train the teachers themselves. If they can't speak well, how can they effectively guide students? Makes(使) sense.
But what's the second solution you mentioned? Well, let's call it the English environment approach(靠近). Imagine if teachers spent a portion(部分) of their class time speaking only in English. For instance(实例), they could dedicate(致力) at least five minutes of each session(会议) to conversing exclusively in English with the students. Interesting idea. Do you think it'll really work?
I'm confident(确信的) it will. Consistent(坚持的) exposure(暴露) to English during class time will help students become more comfortable with the language. Plus, it encourages(鼓励) teachers to improve their own English skills too. Wow, that's impressive(给人印象深刻的). Now tell me, how are your teachers in school? Did they ever speak with you in English?
Certainly. My teachers were quite proficient(熟练的) in English speaking, but I was too shy(羞怯的) to engage(使从事于) with them. Sometimes, the teacher would converse(谈话) with me in English, but I'd get nervous every time. It's funny. I used to dislike(不喜欢) English back then. Ha ha ha.
Seriously(严重地)? I can't believe it. Look at you now. You're so good at English. Thank you. I had to practice a lot, and I'm still learning(学习), you know.
Why did you hate English initially(最初)? Well, one day my father and I were at the market, and we bumped(碰撞) into one of my teachers, a friend of my father's. He asked me a question in English, and I couldn't understand it. I felt so embarrassed(尴尬的) in front of my father. That incident(事件) made(使) me dislike(不喜欢) English, but later I realised I was wrong. What an amazing story.
So, what did you do afterward? I decided to change my perspective(透视画法). I started loving the English language. I learned new words and practiced speaking. I even read English books aloud to improve my pronunciation. Learning new words is like collecting ingredients(成分) for a recipe.
Just as you need the right ingredients to cook a delicious meal, you need a rich vocabulary to express yourself effectively in English. But it doesn't stop there. Knowing the words is one thing. Knowing how to use them in sentences and conversations is equally(同样地) important. I understand, Ronyka. It's not just about having the ingredients.
It's about knowing how to blend(混合) them together to create something meaningful( 意味深长的). Similarly(类似地), mastering(控制) English involves not only learning(学习) words, but also understanding their context and using them appropriately(适当地). Absolutely. I vividly recall(回想) my high school days. Our teachers would give us vocabulary lists to memorise((英)记忆) from the textbook(教科书). However, the catch(捕捉) was that we rarely(很少地) used those words in actual(实际的) sentences or conversations.
As a result, I struggled to retain(保持) them in my memory. You're right. We never practiced using those words in context. It's no wonder( 奇迹) they didn't stick(刺) with us. The key is to apply new vocabulary in real-life situations to reinforce(增援) our understanding and retention(保留). You're absolutely right.
It's frustrating(令人沮丧的) how teachers often focus solely(单独地) on exam scores rather than practical(实践的) language skills. Even though( 虽然) we've been learning(学习) English since our school days, many of us still struggle to speak it fluently. Yes. It's funny, but painfully true. We're all in the same boat, trying to navigate(驾驶) the English language. Let me share an incident.
One day, a teacher asked someone to speak in English in front of the entire(全部的) class. Nobody volunteered(自愿). But eventually(终于), one brave(勇敢的) girl stepped(走) forward and impressed the teacher. The catch? She had memorised her lines beforehand(事先). Ah, memorisation isn't the best approach.
It's much better to express ourselves spontaneously(自发地). Exactly. Students often treat(对待) English like it's rocket(火箭) science, fearing(害怕) every word they utter(发出). But really, it's about practice and confidence(信心). So true, Ronika. We need to break free from that fear and embrace(拥抱) the language.
Let's keep practicing. If you have watched the video till( 直到) now, it means that you are truly(真实地) committed to improving your English. And the good news is that your efforts(努力) are paying off, as you are making progress towards your goal. Keep up the great work. Our aim(目的) is to help you enhance(提高) your English skills. To achieve this goal, we recommend practicing the new words that were used in this conversation.
We kindly(亲切地) request(请求) that you not skip(跳过) the video, as it is crucial(至关重要的) to learning(学习) new words regularly(定期地). Consistent practice is essential for improving your vocabulary and overall(全面的) language proficiency(精通). Let's work together to improve your English. Our sentence... We need to break free from that fear and embrace the language. Certainly, in simple terms, when we say embrace, we mean to welcome, accept and adopt(采用) something willingly(欣然地).
So the phrase break free from that fear and embrace the language suggests overcoming(克服) any fear related(叙述) to language and being open to accepting and using it with a positive and welcoming attitude(态度). It's much better to express ourselves spontaneously. Spontaneously means doing something in a natural and unplanned(意外的) way, without much thought or preparation(准备). It happens on the spur(刺激物) of the moment, without deliberate(深思熟虑的) intention(意图) or premeditation. So if you do something spontaneously, you're doing it impulsively and without a lot of advance(进展) planning. It's no wonder they didn't stick with us.
Wander is used to express surprise or amazement(惊愕). When the speaker says it's no wonder they didn't stick with us, they are suggesting that it's not surprising that those words didn't stay in their memory or become familiar(熟悉的). The use of wonder implies(暗示) that there is a logical(合逻辑的) reason or explanation for the lack(缺乏) of retention(保留) or practice with those words.
