Several cases have been reported in Russia recently of people who can read and detect(察觉) colors with their fingers and even see through solid(固体的) doors and walls. One case concerns(涉及) an eleven-year-old schoolgirl(女学生), Vera Petrova, who has normal vision(视) but who can also perceive(察觉) things with different parts of her skin and through solid(固体的) walls. This ability was first noticed by her father. One day she came into his office and happened to put her hands on the door of a locked safe. Suddenly she asked her father why he kept so many old newspapers locked away there and even described the way they were done up in bundles(捆). Vera's curious(好奇的) talent(天才) was brought to the notice of a scientific(科学(上)的) research institute in the town of Yulanovsk near where she lives.
And in April she was given(做) a series of tests by a special commission(委员会) of the Ministry((政府的)部) of Health of the Russian Federal Republic. During these tests she was able to read a newspaper through an opaque(不透明的) screen and, stranger still, by moving her elbow(肘) over a child's game of lotto, she was able to describe the figures and colors printed on it. And, in another instance(实例), wearing stockings and slippers(拖鞋) to make out with her foot the outlines(轮廓) and colors of a picture hidden under a carpet. Other experiments showed that her knees and shoulders had a similar sensitivity( 敏感). During all these tests Vera was blindfolded and indeed(真正地), except(除了) when blindfolded she lacked( 缺乏) the ability to perceive(察觉) things with her skin. It was also found(找到) that although she could perceive(察觉) things with her fingers this ability ceased(停止) the moment her hands were wet.
