Two factors weigh( 称量) heavily(重重地) against the effectiveness( 效果) of scientific research in industry. One is the general atmosphere(大气) of secrecy(保密) in which it is carried out. The other the lack(缺乏) of freedom(自由) of the individual research worker. Insofar as any inquiry(询问) is a secret one, it naturally(自然地) limits(限制) all those engaged(使从事于) in carrying it out, from effective(有效的) contact(接触) with their fellow(同伴的) scientists either in other countries or in universities or even often enough in other departments of the same firm.
