It refers to an attempt(尝试) to take power from a government or regime(政体), often by military(军队) force. When the people who organise a coup, the coup plotters, are from the military or armed(武装的) forces, you might hear the term military backed(支持) coup(砰然而有效的一击). The organisers(组织者) of an attempted(尝试) coup(砰然而有效的一击) are also described as being behind the coup(砰然而有效的一击).
