Hello, Catherine here from BBC Learning(学习) English. Just so you know, this programme is from the BBC Learning English Archive(档案馆). It was originally( 最初) broadcast(广播) in March(三月) 2007 on our website. Enjoy! Hello, I'm Amber and you're listening to bbclearningenglish.com. In London life today, we sit down to a traditional( 传统的) British breakfast in a smart(聪明的) London restaurant and a greasy spoon( 勺) cafe.
A greasy spoon cafe or calf([解剖] 腓肠) is the opposite of a smart(聪明的) restaurant. We find out what the traditional British breakfast is made of and why it is becoming more and more popular, especially(特别) in London, to eat breakfast in a cafe before arriving at the office for a hard day's work. Our first guest(客人) is an American anthropologist(人类学家). An anthropologist studies all aspects(方面) of human(人的) culture and development(发展). Carrie O'Connor says that strangers(陌生人) to England have a vague(模糊的) vision(视), an unclear(不清楚的) picture in their minds(头脑), of what the traditional British breakfast is. Perhaps(也许) it's served( 为…服务) from silver(银灰色的) dishes on a grand sideboard.
As you listen, try to catch(捉住) what Carrie lists as the three main ingredients(成分) of the great British breakfast. It's a meal that everyone outside(在外面(的)) of England has heard of and dreams(做梦) about and we don't know what it is, but when we come here, we want to eat it and we have some vague vision of, you know, a sideboard with silver dishes and it's just going to be the most wonderful thing on earth(地球). And I got here and I went to a cafe and there was the bacon(咸肉), eggs and chips([电子] 芯片) and I thought, gosh, is this all there is?
