Meeting Colin In the middle(中部) of the night Mary woke up. Heavy(重的) rain had started falling again and the wind(风) was blowing(吹) violently round the walls of the old house. Suddenly(突然地) she heard crying(哭) again. This time she decided to discover(发现) who it was. She left her room and in the darkness(黑暗) followed the crying(哭) sound. Round(附近) corners(角) and through doors, up and down stairs(楼梯) to the other side(方面) of the big house.
At last(最后) she found(找到) the right room. She pushed(推) the door open and went in. It was a big room with beautiful old furniture( 〈总称〉 家具) and pictures. In the large bed was a boy who looked tired and cross(穿过) with a thin(薄的) white tearful face. He stared( 盯着看) at Mary. "Who are you?" he whispered(低声地讲).
"Are you a dream(梦)?" "No, I'm not. I'm Mary Lennox. Mr.Craven's my Uncle." "He's my father," said the boy. "I'm Colin Craven." "No one ever told me he had a son," said Mary, very surprised(感到惊讶的). "Well, no one ever told me you'd come to live here."
"I'm ill(有病的), you see. I don't want people to see me and talk about me. If I live, I may(可能) have a crooked(弯曲的) back like my father, but I'll probably die." "What a strange(陌生的) house this is," said Mary. "So many secrets(秘密的). Does your father come and see you often?" "Not often. He doesn't like seeing me because it makes him remember my mother. She died when I was born. So he almost(几乎) hates me, I think."
"Why do you say you're going to die?" asked Mary. "I've always been ill. I've nearly(差不多) died several(几个的) times and my back's never been strong. My doctor feels sure that I'm going to die. But he's my father's cousin and very poor. So he'd like me to die.
