Rarely have the paradise beaches of Seychelles been so empty, but tourists are now trickling(滴流) back to these islands in the Indian Ocean, including from Germany. Tourism is a major source of income(收入) for the islanders(岛上居民), but that revenue(收入) is also needed to save this unique(唯一的) nature. Time to set off on today's excursion(远足). The first group of tourists are waiting out on the catamarans. The tourists that come here, there's a limit. They only come in the morning.
So you see, it helps fund(投资) the project. It keeps the conservation(保存) work going. When we do tours, we try to advocate(提倡) what we are doing here on the island. What's the purpose of the work? They are on their way to Cousin Island, where a rare species of bird was saved from extinction. This island is a holiday highlight for many tourists.
They would come to Seychelles mostly because of the beach and also for snorkeling and diving, but this causes a lot of threats(威胁) to the marine(海的) area, corals, cause a lot of pressure. So I think it would be best if we can stabilize(使稳固) a bit with the tourists, but also we need them to continue, the economic need them as well. Each visitor has to pay the equivalent(等价物) of €37. This fee(费) mainly pays for the rangers(突击队员), like Dylus Lawrence. He won the African Ranger Award in 2020. Good morning, it's Dylus.
Welcome to Cousin Island Special Reserve(储备(物)). I know the tour is about an hour more. In 1968, we discovered a small bird called the Seychelles Warbler(啭鸟). At that time, it was close to extinction. At the same time, Birdlight International bought the island, turned it into a reserve to save the warbler. For now, we have around 3000 or more of the warblers in the situation.
The fun part about the fairytale is that they don't build any nests(巢). They just found(找到) a small dent on a branch and they laid the egg on it. Most of the females who cover the egg, so she will sit there for around 20 to 30 days. Yes, and the male will come and feed her with fish. Otherwise(另外), if she moves, the eggs fall. The parents will come and feed it with fish, but it will stay there until it learns how to fly.
But what makes Cousin special is the plateau(高地) of the island. Those hard rocks, they are not granite(花岗岩), but guano. Yes, which is a mixture of birds, poop, sand, water and all of their breeds(品种). And when it solidifies( 巩固), it becomes hard as a rock. With an area of 27 hectares(公顷), Cousin Island is among the smaller of the Seychelles Islands. But it's home to more than 300,000 birds and much more.
That's as big as they get. And also to easily identify the female, if you look at the back leg, you can see the toes. They have long toes and that helps to dig(掘) in the soil to lay the eggs. The gentle toys, they can live up to 200 years or more. It was lovely to see so many birds up close. They're not shy either, even the tiny babies.
Humans have hardly encroached((逐步或暗中)侵占) here. They've cleared a few paths, put the wood to the side and that's all. And there's no concrete(混凝土), just a few cottages. The tourists get back on the boat, but Dylus stays behind, soaking(浸) in his surroundings. You know, maybe some people will think, but the birds, they're doing the same thing every day. You see the tortoise, just not the case.
When you live with them, you learn to appreciate. It's different every day. Every day the sun sets, every day the sun rises. You see the beauty every single day, every minute, every second as well. Dylus shows us around. As a passionate(有激情的) ranger(突击队员), he knows everything about this island.
Including the bird call to attract the Seychelles magpie(鹊) robin. For easier monitoring, we ring each bird with different colors. Like my name is Dylus, this is violet(紫罗兰色的) blue. They can be shocked(使休克) and quiet, they can be blue or orange as well. But this paradise is threatened(威胁) by more and more extreme weather events. During the season of the sea turtle, we come to lay the egg, which is October to February March(三月).
We get around 800,000 turtles coming to lay the egg. They will come just here in the sand, dig it and lay the eggs. But with the erosion(腐蚀), it continues to come further up inland. Most of the time the nest will get washed away. Climate change and the resulting weather are also a threat to the ranger's homes. Yeah, under the house.
Under the house. Because of erosion, which happened last year. And now we're just trying to stack(堆积) up some rocks. Dylus would like his African ranger award to be shared by the whole team. For him, it's about more than a prize. To be able to win the ranger award, that has become huge as it has put seashells on the map in terms of conservation of wildlife(野生动物).
Nature conservation is valuable in itself. But it's also become a selling point for tourists. And something that justifies(证明合法) the high costs of staying on the archipelago(群岛). A vacation in paradise is expensive, but tourists are willing(愿意的) to pay for it. Alongside( 在旁边) them, the people of seashells celebrate their Creole culture and language. A few kilometers away, two people are getting ready for their big day.
Just some final preparations(准备) and they'll be ready to take their first steps into married life. Far away from their home in Austria. We wanted our wedding to be something special. We wanted to get away somewhere where we could be alone and by the sea. I don't think there's any place more beautiful. I don't regret(懊悔) it.
I do it again and again. It couldn't be any easier. The registrar(登记员) joins them right there on the beach. Today is the beginning of a new chapter for you. And today, you are celebrating your love. And in a few minutes, you will walk out from here as husband and wife, ready to face the challenges of the married world.
As a sign of my love. As a sign of my love. According(使一致) we pronounce you United in Wales. You make it the bride. A lot of bookings(预订) are coming in right now. We've caught up a lot.
Of course there's still a void( 空隙) that's not been filled. I'm optimistic(乐观的) that things will keep progressing(前进). People will keep booking and will do fine(罚款). A wedding package costs around a thousand euros and covers everything from the photographer to the coconut(椰子) drinks. I searched online for places to get married. Just the two of us and say shells came up first.
We also looked into Mauritius and some other options. Let's take another photo through the tree and then we'll head over to the rocks.
