A sanctuary(避难所) for birds in southern Albania. Each year, Joni counts the birds in Narta Lagoon([地理][水文] 泻湖). Every day we can count here from 2000 up to 4000 individuals. If we put airplanes here, it will be completely a disaster. Nearby(附近的), the government is building an international airport, right in the middle of a nature preserve. It's meant to bring in more tourists.
This is illegal in the end of the day, starting from the lack of public hearings( 听力), from the lack of consultations(商议), from the environmental impact assessment(评估) and many, many other issues. Can Joni and his Environmental Protection(保护) Agency(经办) halt(停止) the airport's completion? Zidion Vorpsey, friends call him Joni, loves taking pictures of birds. It's also his job to count them. He works(使工作) for the Environmental NGO Protection(保护) and Preservation(保存) of Natural Environment in Albania, or Pippa Nia for short. He's been out here for three weeks.
His job requires patience(忍耐). Sometimes it takes days to spot(认出) a rare bird species. Yes, I was known for my patience since I was really young. I used to play basketball, and one of the things that the professor used to tell( 告诉) to the team and to me was that, yeah, I should keep being patient(忍耐的) as I was and would suggest to others to be patient(忍耐的) as well. He's worried about the Dalmatian pelicans. They come here in search of food and fly directly over the area where the airfield is planned to be built.
A species that is bouncing(弹跳) back nowadays(现今) is hope, but still it has the status(身份) of being critically(批评性地) endangered. It will be more threatened(威胁) tomorrow because one of their main habitats((动植物的)生活环境) will be not so easy to reach. So it's really hard for the pelicans to get used to the hours of flights. And on the other hand, this will also pose(形成) a threat(威胁) to the aircrafts(飞机) themselves. For years, Yoni and his organization have been counting all the native and migratory(迁移的) birds in this lagoon([地理][水文] 泻湖). There are over 200 species, and the numbers are rising.
This area is crucial(至关重要的) for the preservation(保存) of rare bird species across Europe, but Albania's government doesn't seem to care, Yoni says. These numbers are also provided to the government so they can have better management interventions(干涉). All these data(资料), it seems like they are not ever seen, ever observed(遵守). It seems like they are somewhere in a dusty place in the offices of the government of decision makers. Further on, we meet professors and students from the University of Tirana. For many years, biologists(生物学家) and geologists(地质学家) have been collecting data(资料) on the Viosa River that drains into the Mediterranean not far from here.
They are looking to prove how ecologically diverse(不同的) this region is. Plagades fasinelis. Look how many there are. Wow, they're huge. Those are glossy(平滑的) ibises. They're twice as big as you usually see.
Professor Ferdinand Pego explains that this region is crucial for certain species. This area might seem unimportant, but it's their habitat. These freshwater(淡水的) reserves(储备(物)) south of Zvernek are the only place they can survive. Is the glossy ibis edible(可食用的)? You can eat it, but it smells bad and doesn't taste like much. You have to marinate it first.
Professor Aleko Miho and his colleagues have found plenty of indications(指示) that this area is ecologically healthy. They're also familiar with Joni's data. In the past few years, this region has recovered(恢复) in many ways. For example, the numbers of birds and species are rising. Something we can prove, because the populations are counted every year. That's one of the reasons why we insist(坚持) this area is protected.
They're talking to a journalist, telling her about the foreign researchers who support their work. I'm glad some of them have come to join us. Austrian(奥地利的) colleagues will be in the mountains in Tepalene this summer. A professor has joined us from Vienna, and they will help us analyse and summarise the data. They're all working toward the same goal. They want to see the Närter lagoon included in the recently established(建立) Viosa Wild River National(国民) Park.
If they can get the Viosa River Delta(三角州) included in the National(国民) Park, that would mean the end of the airport. The coast is a treasure(财富) trove(被发现的东西) for the group's geologists(地质学家). Soft rocks, sculpted by wind and the waves, constant(不变的) change. Other European universities are also interested in this unique(唯一的) coastal(海滨的) landscape(风景) that Professor Czachis Domishi is showing to his students. We have students from there that come to us, and our students go there to get their diploma. We offer joint(共同的) degrees.
We've also conducted(指挥) joint(共同的) PhD programmes with Albanians, Germans, Belgians and the French. They're well connected. They hope that will help them preserve(保护) the landscape(风景) here. Joni's Pippenaya has joined forces with other organisations to take legal action against the airport. They cite(引用) procedural(程序上的) errors and say the disputed(争论) area was removed from the nature reserve(储备(物)) retroactively. The runways for takeoff and landing(上岸) are over three kilometres long.
The terminal(末端) is up next. It should be able to handle(拿) up to two million passengers a year. The project has also drawn criticism(批评) at the EU level. There are reactions from the European Parliament(议会), from MPs. They have requested to the Commission(委员会) what will be done to stop this construction(建造) here in the protected area. I'm coming over to say something.
You want to come say something? No, no. What would I say? As a private citizen(公民), sure. If I weren't working, I know just what I'd say. You're fantastic.
Better not ask me, or I'll get fired tomorrow. OK. The guard offers to get his bosses, but they've suddenly vanished(突然不见). He does, though, find plenty to say, of course, as a private citizen. OK. Even if they do fire you, we'll find work for you.
Where can I find you? I'll give you my number. I'll give you my number. I'll give you my number.
