What? You want my milkshake? Here. Hmm. It's 18-19. As the United States Congress(大会) prepares to make Missouri(密苏里州(美国州名)) the 24th state in the Union, Representative(代表) James Talmadge Jr.delivers a speech.
He says slavery(奴隶制) is morally(道德上) wrong, calling it an "abomination" and a "monstrous(巨大的) scourge." He insists(坚持) that the extension(延长部分) of the evil(邪恶) must now be prevented, and that slavery shouldn't be allowed in Missouri or any new state. Obviously. Representative Tyler disagrees. He believes it is a state's right to choose whether or not to allow slavery. He doesn't think the federal(联邦的) government can prohibit(阻止) slavery(奴隶制) in any newly added states.
What? Senator(参议员) Thomas proposes(提议) what he sees as a compromise(妥协). Missouri will join the Union along with another state, Maine(缅因州(美国东北角的州)). Slavery will be allowed in Missouri and prohibited in Maine. He also suggests drawing a line through territories(领土) yet to become states. Slavery will be prohibited north of the line and allowed south of it.
And this is where I have to draw the line. That's better.
