I do not remember everything they did.

Chapter 5 Looking for work.

I do not remember everything they did.

00:00

I do not remember everything they did. Charlotte and Anne worked as governesses for some months, teaching rich children in big houses, and Branwell got a job like that too for a while(一段时间). But they didn't like their work. At home my children were full of talk( 谈话) and laughter(笑), but away from home they were shy(羞怯的), quiet, unhappy(不快乐的). They wrote a lot of letters in their search( 搜寻) for work, sometimes to famous people. Branwell wanted to be a writer, so he wrote to writers, but not many of them wrote back(在后).
He began to look pale((肤色)苍白的) and sad in those days, and he was often in the village pub(酒馆), drinking and talking to the people there. Then he got a job selling tickets on the railways(铁路) and left home. The girls had an idea. I remember the day when they told me about it. Charlotte and Anne were at home on holiday, and we were all( 全部) in the sitting room after dinner one evening. Anne was playing the piano and singing(烧焦) quietly(安静地) to herself(她自己).
She was the prettiest of the three girls, I suppose(猜想). She had long wavy(波状的) brown hair and a gentle(和蔼的), kind( 善良的) face. Emily sat on the floor beside(在…旁边) her, stroking((用笔等)画) the ears of her dog, Keeper(看护人). Charlotte sat opposite me on the sofa like a little child with a serious(认真严肃的), thoughtful(沉思的) face. She was the smallest. Her feet were no bigger than my hands.
She looked at me carefully(小心地). "Papa," she said, "we want to start a school." "Really, my dear?" "Where?" "Here." "But, Charlotte, my dear, we have no room. This house is full already(早已).
