So, how many of you have a robot(机器人) at home? Okay(好), I see about 20, 30 hands. That's actually pretty good. How many of you would want your own personal robot at home? I know I would. Okay, so why doesn't this exist?
Why can't I go to the convenience(便利) store, the department store, and go up to the cashier((商店等的)出纳员) and say, "Yeah, I want my personal robot"? Well, I'm going to talk to you about how to make(使) that happen. The things that we need to do is to make robots smarter. Now, no one will argue that we don't have robots. We have rovers that are going to Mars that are getting science data(资料) and are expanding(使膨胀) our understanding of the world. We have manufacturing(制造业) robots(机器人) that are helping to build our cars that we drive today. We even have robots that are helping our military(军队), that are out disposing(去掉) of bombs(炸弹) so our soldiers can come home safely(安全地).
So we have all this. So why don't we have the personal robot? Why don't I have my robot chef? Because I can't cook. So here's one of my robots. This is a simple walking robot, but it's by no means smart(聪明的).
And so what we need to do is we need to change the definition(定义) of what a robot(机器人) is. How do we do that? Well, the first step, before we even start designing and getting our hands dirty, we have to come up with rules, kind(种类) of the laws, rules of conduct(举止). And why is this? Because if these robots are smart, they might be capable(有能力的) of more than we want. And so we have to come up with rules.
Thou robot shall not harm(损害) a human. Thou shalt obey(顺从) me and only me. Thou shalt always protect me at all possible times. So we have to lay(置放) the boundaries(分界线), the rules of engagement(婚约) before we actually start designing. And then we have to come up with tools. So I believe that the way to make robots smarter is to mimic(模仿) people.
Now, our brains are complex(复杂的). There's a lot going on in there. And so it'd be hard to try to open up the brain and actually figure( 认为) out how to mimic(模仿) humans. The best way is to observe(遵守), is to actually watch people do things and figure( 认为) out what are they doing?
